Clifton & Dakin, Spar Cambridge.

Nick Clifton and John Dakin have built this newsagent into a thriving business in this high-density residential area, serving thousands of students from local colleges and universities in a tough and competitive environment.
Nick and John have greatly improved the business, improving access to news and magazines and the snacks and confectionery fixtures and they now have plans to extend the store from 1,600sq ft to 2,000sq ft, enabling them to provide 15ft of shelving for magazines.
They have ambitious marketing plans and are set to expand their news delivery service with a liveried van and provide broadband services so customers can order online.
The store provides seven news delivery rounds Monday to Saturday and six on Sundays. Clifton & Dakin also delivers newspapers to 67 flats in residential homes. Judges were impressed by the care taken with elderly customers and their news requirements and the help provided with home deliveries.
One judge said: "Nick and John are both very good operators with a strong CTN background."
Another said: " They have identified their unique sales proposition to be by far the best CTN and to promote their services over a wide area. The store standards they are achieving after their recent store development are very good and sales are continuing to grow."

The category was open to CTNs, newsagents and those retailers who are fully committed to selling newspapers and magazines.

The Criteria
Retailers need to provide documentation (including photography) showing how they have done the following over the past 12 months:

Created a point of difference from other newsagents.

Established a short and long-term strategy for the development of your business

Used category management reflecting local demand

Made improvements to the business with tangible results

Planned to further develop the business in the near future
