THE BEGINNING
Established
as a regional retail equipment supplier in September 1989 and trading from rented
premises in North Nottinghamshire. Shop-Equip quickly grew and achieved £0.5m
sales in the first year. Expansion followed in 1991 with the purchase of new premises,
a converted church, and the company developed its services to offer a full retail
CAD design. STORM CLOUDS By 1993
the storm clouds had gathered and following the pit closure programme the local
economy collapsed. Sales of equipment plummeted and clearly drastic action was
needed to ensure the survival of Shop-Equip The workforce was contracted from
16 to just 8 staff and new marketing methods were explored to rebuild the business.
MAIL ORDER BEGINS 1994 saw the introduction
of mail order activity and Shop-Equip diversified into manufacturing a limited
range of shop furniture. The effect of lower prices and a geographically wider
target market was significant and sales grew over 50% in the year from just £460,000
to £661,169. Production expanded in 1995 and the factory was extended
from 1,200 square feet to 10,000 square feet. Catering products were added to
the range and sales continued to grow. With the introduction of a new multi user
customer care computer system sales had reached £2m by 1997.
INVESTORS IN PEOPLE COMPANY 1999 and
building started on new head office and warehouse premises adjoining the factory,
which were completed in July 2000. At the same time Shop-Equip won accreditation
as an investor in people company and sales have continued to grow to their current
level of £3.7m. Continuing growth of over 30% each year for the last 6 years
is a vivid demonstration of the popularity of Shop-Equips marketing strategy.
Customers clearly like to be offered quality products at low prices and judging
by the high number of repeat orders appreciate the professionalism of our staff
